This is a result of the study by UCLA and Tsinghua University. HSR will increase property value, decrease commuting time, reducing congestions, more people live in the secondary cities, etc. This also happens after Kyushu Shinkansen started the operation in Japan. European airlines operating margin 2012 (% of revenue) and change from 2011 (percentage points) CAPA: European airline's financial results in 2012 There is a striking difference in operating margin between LCC and legacy carriers. CAPA: Low-cost airline Peach boldly pursues Japan-Southeast Asia one-stop market using new Okinawa base If you look at the map below, you can see that Okinawa is located at the centre of Asia. Here are some of the unique point of Peach operation:
The New York Times: Access to the Yaeyamas Ishigaki Airport in Okinawa newly opened recently. Ishigaki has a beautiful coral beach where you can enjoy snorkeling and diving. New Haven Register: Amtrak travel from New York to Boston resumes following freight train derailment
It was a derailment of freight train. CAPA: Southwest Airlines, the US' fourth force, does not neatly fit the emerging US business models. The unit costs of Southwest Airlines are almost same as those of the US Airways. The unit costs of ultra low-cost such as Allegiant or Spirit are far cheaper. Profitability is always an issue. Not only just introducing HSR, we have to consider the urban structure itself. The Washington Post: Washington company continues lobbying for maglev line in Northeast. Maglev could connect New York and Washington DC in 60 minutes. Again, the reform of urban structure should be taken into account at the same time when you introduce HSR or maglev. I heard that the mode share of rail and air between New York and Washington DC was about 10%, meaning the rest of the transportation is done by vehicles. I have to check the data to confirm this mode share. CAPA: JetBlue enjoys a cost "sweet spot" in the consolidating US market .
Its hybrid product remains attractive to customers with a distaste for the ultra low cost business model adopted by Spirit Airlines and the higher fares charged by US legacy airlines. An interesting report by CAPA: Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways' growth Part I: Expanding role in Northeast Asia-Southeast Asia traffic
Interesting analysis of this report is its explanation about the potential of Southeast - Northeast Asian market. Most of the LCC's activities in Asia are in Southeast Asia and LCC in Northeast Asia also starts growing recently. However legacy carriers still dominate the connection between Southeast and Northeast Asia. TransAsia provide several services in Japan but it focuses on not the most major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka but Sapporo or Fukuoka which is still a niche market. |
